I participated in LT51 earlier this Spring on Cgalik's team in Match#2. LT57 is the 3rd game in a series of team-matches between Cgalik and Kevin551 (and their respective team-members). (update March 5 2021: the game is now over, and everybody is welcome to read the story (if they dare).) It was all just an autistic child's dream. The Pixar villain was the protagonist's father figure. If anybody has accused RealmsBeyond of being stuck in the past, they've got nothing on the FreeCiv people!įreeCiv: Still trying to answer the question "What if Civilization 2 had a sequel?" Wait a minute, I joined a PitBoss game without realizing it!", so I thought I'd come share some of my adventures with another strange and different Civ-Playing community. It was only last week though that I realized "Hey, this is the sort of thing that the PitBoss players on the RB forums are interested in. I'm currently controlling the Hansa, the Kashmiri (neighbors to the NE), and the Ottomans (who control a strategically vital isthmus). As happens in any large long-term commitment, a number of players dropped out, and we ended up with about 20 players controlling 36 nations. Arguing over research policies, discussing city placement patterns, coordinating military efforts on our 3 fronts (Russian Front, Foothold, and Panama), and delegating control of nations when players have to go on vacation. So, for the last month and a half, I've been playing away at this game, one turn a day (technically a 23 hour clock so as not to show time-zone favoritism), and enjoying chatting with my team on our own Discord server. Pyramids also lift the penalty to tile yields of 3+ for the governments of both Despotism and Tribalism, basically launching you into an early Monarchy (but without the reduced corruption) Did I mention this is a custom ruleset? Your retinas will appreciate the reduced visual clutter.īronswiek is displaying enhanced tile-yields, because it was where I built the Pyramids(+1 production/tile) and Colossus(+1 trade/tile), both of which are Small Wonders that are available for each nation. You can also witness my smoother, more distinct terrain, and the pip-based tile yield graphics. Here you can see the lands of the Hanseatic League (get it?) with the LT ruleset's large city-radii and my workers wandering about the countryside making improvements. So I took an ugly tileset, and made it 43% less ugly! Two stripes of 18 players each across a weird snaky continent.Īlso, I ended up making my own set of terrain graphics, because the existing ones either showed too little of the map (tiles too big), distorted the view (isometric perspective on a rectangular map? Maybe that works out fine with X/Y wrapping, but I didn't want to wrap my head around it), or were just too ugly. Besides, what did I care? We had a whole world to explore! 182x182 squares on an X/Y wrapping world. But I was oblivious to any imbalances at first, since there wasn't a lot of communication between Blue and Red teams. This was a ruleset designed to skip the bullshit and get straight to the action.įor this game they were attempting a Two-Team game, and if you know anything about the snowballing nature of Civ, it is not surprising that this ended up being its undoing. Settlers founded cities that encompassed 45 tiles (7x7 with corners missing, as produced by a sqrt(13) radius), workers worked at 3x normal speed (as befitted the accelerated pace), and cities were founded with a "Free Granary" effect that lasted until size 5. Explorers ran around the map at 9 squares per turn seeing with a 3 square radius. It was quite interesting to try to learn the game all over again.Įverybody started with 5 Settlers, 5 Workers, and 2 Explorers, and all movement points were Tripled. Over the years they've refined a ruleset that is a bastard offspring of Civilization 2 and 3, and adjusted to for multiplayer. Entire rulesets can be swapped out and replaced with the flick of a wrist. Whatever FreeCiv lacks in approachability or aesthetics, it more than makes up for in it's modularity and flexibility. LongTurn is a "Turn-a-day" multiplayer game using the highly flexible FreeCiv client. I failed in this quest, but in discussion on the forums, I got invited to join one of their "LongTurn" games that was just starting up. I had had an urge to play them but was bothered by my knowledge of how fundamentally broken Civ2's AI is, so I thought I'd see if their AI could provide some improvement. Initially I went on the FreeCiv forums hoping to find a utility that could convert some of Civ2's old scenarios to be playable in FreeCiv. I recently got sucked into a "Long Turn" game, which is basically FreeCiv's answer to PitBoss games, but with their own homebrew ruleset.

Also, 3R4F stimulation led to an impaired endothelial wound healing and induced a pro-inflammatory phenotype compared to NGP treatment. Laboratory tests help doctors and specialists diagnose a wide variety of health conditions and diseases. NGP responses were typically lower than in 3R4F exposed cells. In conclusion, all product categories activated anti-oxidative or pro-inflammatory patterns. Interestingly, only stimulation with 3R4F revealed increased monocyte adhesion under atherosclerosis-prone low flow. Finally, under static conditions, all components increased adhesion of monocytes to endothelial cells. From this downregulated level, only 3R4F increased CCL2 expression at higher concentrations. Stimulation with laminar flow led to downregulation of CCL2 ( MCP-1). High laminar flow prevented this upregulation. SELE expression was induced by 3R4F under static conditions. 3R4F reduced VCAM1 expression in a dose-dependent manner HTP treatment had similar but milder effects e-cig and nicotine treatment had no impact. Analyses of pro-inflammatory genes revealed an increased ICAM1 expression under 3R4F treatment. Treatment with HTP revealed an induction of HMOX1 and NQO1 at dosages with ≥1.68 μg/ml nicotine, whereas e-cig and nicotine exposure had no impact. 3R4F stimulation led to activation of NRF2 antioxidant defense system at nicotine concentrations ≥0.56 μg/ml and increased expression of its target genes HMOX1 and NQO1. Laminar flow delayed detrimental effects on cell viability by 3R4F treatment. Treatment with 3R4F, but not alternative smoking products, reduced endothelial cell viability and wound healing capability via the PI3K/AKT/eNOS(NOS3) pathway. All experiments were performed under atheroprotective high laminar or atherogenic low flow with primary human endothelial cells. In this study, we analyzed key parameters of endothelial function after exposure to aqueous smoke extracts (AqE) of a heated tobacco product (HTP), an electronic cigarette (e-cig), a conventional cigarette (3R4F) and pure nicotine. However, little is known about their potential pro-inflammatory and atherogenic effects on the endothelium. As an alternative to smoking, next generation tobacco and nicotine products (NGP) are now widely used. To my eye, given all of the images that I have run through the software in these weeks since Photo Plus, I have seen no quality loss. Well, to sum things up quickly – it worked exactly as advertised. How did it perform, was there any noticeable quality loss, and what sort of space savings did we see? Ok, so we have established now what JPEGMini is and how it works (on a base level), and now it is time to discuss its performance. In the Photoshop version of the plugin it tells you how much space you are saving right there in Photoshop, which is really nice. You simply install the plugin, activate it in Lightroom, and add it to your export workflow, and voila – every JPEG you export from Lightroom will be automatically compressed upon export, without you ever having to open up another program. If you choose to make use of the Lightroom plugin that is available with the PRO version, then things are even easier. In other words, when you use JPEGMini the JPEG that you get out on the other side is the smallest and most compressed your image file can be without affecting quality. There are no image quality settings with JPEGMini because they only have one goal, to compress an image as far as possible until visible quality is affected, and then it stops just shy of it. You do have a few options as far as settings in the software, and that is to export your newly compressed JPEG files into a new folder (as well as resize them if you like), or to simply overwrite the original JPEGs with the new smaller versions. When you are using the desktop software, you simply drag your JPEG files onto the program and then the JPEGMini Algorithm does its magic, compressing your image(s) and saving you tons of space. Ease of UseĪs far as ease of use, it is hard to make a simpler piece of software. It can be used as a standalone app on your desktop, or they also have Photoshop and Lightroom plugins that allow you to export compressed JPEGs from those programs without having to open JPEGMini to compress after exporting, a huge time saver. JPEGMini, for those unaware, is a compression program for Mac and PC that allows you to compress your JPEG files by many times, saving you valuable storage space, all without – they claim – any visible loss in quality. Today it is time to share my thoughts on this software for you. I was skeptical, so when they offered to let me test drive their Pro version while we met with them at Photo Plus, I took them up on it. JPEGMini has been around for some time now, but as you would expect, many photographers are skeptical of any compression system that could possibly have a negative impact on quality or appearance of their images in print or digital. The solution for this, at least when it comes to JPEG files, is JPEGMini – or at least that is what they claim it to be. The saying ‘Storage is Cheap’ is true, but only to a point, and a frugal photographer should always be looking for ways to cut back on the amount of storage space they need to store their images – both at home and on the web. In an age where sensor resolution is getting higher and higher, those MB, GB, and TB on your computers at home are simply not getting you where they used to. By conducting the same experiment, and inviting the children to engage with their creativity, it will certainly create an opportunity for conversation with their own families and friends about soil - sharing how the soil needs our attention and care just now. I believe that connection with soil is an essential component in raising awareness about the soil itself and its depletion. They will monitor the experiment using their creative skills and we will reconnect in the middle of the project. After listening to their own experiences I shared the idea of recreating the bean project. The children were of different ages and showed a good range of familiarity with the soil some were more involved than others. I had the pleasure of repeating the experiment and photographing it in detail as well as contacting two families and engaging with their children about soil. My involvement with Save Soil has brought the opportunity to engage once again with the bean project. We sat on the ground to deepen their experience. How was it possible for a seed to transform itself into a plant on a piece of cotton wool and then grow enough to continue living in soil? I recalled transplanting it into the soil and still now remember the smell of that soil too.Īs a parent I had revived the experiment, watching my children growing their own beans at school.Īs a child photographer, there were many times when I had witnessed children connect deeply with the wonder of forests. This first experience never lost its sense of magic and mystery for me. I was about 7 years old and my teacher asked us to monitor the growth of a bean and look after that tiny piece of life. When I joined the Save Soil movement I saw the possibility to reconnect with my first memory about soil. All products xXx Technologies Ltd everything works 100% If I have one color that's rgb(0,0,0,128), and another color that's rgb(0,0,0,64), these are two unique colors in my palette, not one color with two transparencies. And that's all that alpha transparency really is, it's an entry in the color palette. In the same way, unrestricted use of alpha transparency can cause an image to lose it's identity as pixel art. However, no one at Deviant Art or Pixel Joint ever says "unrestricted use", and that's really the heart of the matter.Ī 1024x768px image using 400 colors certainly doesn't look very much like pixel art, and there's a good reason for that: there was no restriction in either canvas or palette. I guess this is the same way that I feel about unrestricted dithering, anti-aliasing, or color palettes. Digging into the comments unearths the feeling that transparency dilutes or cheapens the art. Should I really spend any time going into how ignorant this statement is? God gave me a special finger for these cases, and I choose to use it. Now, what is the problem with transparency? The ruling from Deviant Art is that "the only tools used should be the pencil tool, the eye dropper and the eraser". I don't think I'd be here were it not for the wonderfully moody wisps of steam rising above the town of Narshe these were the first images I ever tried to reproduce as a game (and ran into Internet Explorer's inability to display alpha transparencies). To rule out games like Final Fantasy 6 for it's use of alpha transparencies is a great way to undermine your own credibility. The greatest pixel art ever seen (arguably, of course) comes from the SNES era, which made alpha transparencies available as part of the platform. However, when anyone starts saying "These are the rules of pixel art", that's when I get pissed. This is fine if a single website wants to say "These are the rules for this website", that's their prerogative. Without a function for their output to perform, the folks at Pixel Joint (and now Deviant Art) are grasping at straws trying to keep cohesion. These restrictions stem from the functional nature of pixel art: Pixel art was born from the restrictions of computers, and had to perform it's function in that environment. But these restrictions aren't arbitrary, like the ones Deviant Art and Pixel Joint are forcing on the art. Pixel art is defined by it's restrictions, in palette size, color choice, canvas size, and many other ways. How many video games has Pixel Joint ever produced? Personally, I'm not familiar with their art, and don't care about what they say. Unfortunately, people all over the internet have been duped into believing this is true. Pixel Joint is an internet community which believes itself to be God's gift to pixel art, and the definitive voice concerning pixel art. Now, what is Pixel Joint, you wonder? I most certainly did the first time I heard about them. This follows a similar ruling from the folks over at Pixel Joint. Staff members at Deviant Art recently posted a news article describing how any image containing partial transparencies (alpha channel), or which looks as though it was made using transparency effects, will be removed from the pixel art category. Note: This text also appears as a forum post for the BYOND Pixel Art Society. |
